Westell

Prepare Westell devices for QUARK Config Backup.

This guide covers the Westell 8178G and 8266G Ethernet network interface devices.

Westell 8178G

Create a backup account. In the device's management interface, create a dedicated login — for example netwatch-backup — with rights to view the complete configuration. If the firmware supports only a limited set of accounts, use an administrative login with a strong password. QUARK only reads the configuration and never modifies the device.

Enable management access. Enable the SSH server in the management settings if your firmware release provides it; older releases may only offer Telnet, which QUARK can use instead. Restrict management access (TCP 22 or 23) to the Netwatch collector's IP with the device's management access controls where available, or an upstream ACL otherwise.

Notes. Log in manually once as the backup account and confirm the full configuration can be displayed — account rights and CLI behavior vary between firmware revisions.

Westell 8266G

Create a backup account. As with the 8178G, create a dedicated login with rights to view the complete configuration in the management interface, or use an administrative account where the firmware does not support additional users.

Enable management access. Prefer SSH where the firmware supports it and fall back to Telnet only where it does not. Limit management sources to the Netwatch collector's IP using the device's access controls or an ACL on the upstream aggregation device.

Notes. Verify configuration retrieval manually after preparing the account, and disable Telnet on units where SSH is available.

Enable backup in Netwatch

Once the device is prepared, open its host in Netwatch (Data collection > Hosts) and add the Config Backup macros — the supported status flag, the model code for this platform, and the credentials you created. See Getting started for the full macro list and values.
